Kennedy Jr., President Donald Trump's nominee to lead a department that oversees FDA, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and myriad other health agencies. As I , some stakeholders in the dietary supplement industry are excited about the possibility of Kennedy directing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). To state the obvious, RFK Jr.'s nomination has been a very controversial one — with many critics describing him as a conspiracy theorist. The focus of the hearing was not on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which principally regulates dietary supplements, though there was plenty of discussion about the health of Americans. More specific insights may come to light about Kennedy's potential influence over FDA during , which is being hosted by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP). That committee has jurisdiction over FDA, CDC and NIH. Below are three of my takeaways from the before the Senate Finance Committee. Takeaway 1: Kennedy continued to emphasize his plan — and that of Trump — to “make America healthy again,” and he made it clear that too many Americans are plagued with disease, and that's unacceptable. “The United States has worse health than any other developed nation, yet we spend far more on healthcare — at least double; and in some cases, triple,” Kennedy said in his . He added later, “A healthy person has a thousand dreams. A sick person has only one. Today, over half of our countrymen and women are chronically ill.” More than an hour into the hearing, RFK Jr. lamented, “We have the highest chronic disease burden of any country in the world.” He went on to say the U.S. had a higher death count from Covid-19 than any other country, “and when CDC was asked why, ‘They said it's because Americans are the sickest people on earth.'” Kennedy described the health problems facing Americans as “an existential threat economically, to our military, to our health, to our sense of wellbeing, and it is a priority for President Trump, and that's why he asked me to run the agency, and if I'm privileged to be confirmed, that's exactly what I'll do.” Takeaway 2: The Democrats excoriated RFK Jr. on his positions concerning vaccines, abortion and other issues. They maintained the environmental lawyer has flip-flopped on issues like abortion and demonstrated through his anti-vaccine positions, for example, that he cannot be trusted to lead HHS. “The receipts show that Mr. Kennedy has embraced conspiracy theories, quacks and charlatans, especially when it comes to the safety and efficacy of vaccines,” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said in his . “He's made it his life's work to sow doubt and discourage parents from getting their kids life-saving vaccines. It's been lucrative for him and put him on the verge of real power. This is the profile of somebody who chases money and influence wherever they lead, even if that means the deaths of children and other vulnerable people.” Kennedy pushed back against the narrative in news reports and from Democrats during the hearing that he's anti-vaccine. He further maintained he's not an enemy of industry. “I am pro-safety,” he asserted in his written statement. “I worked for years to raise awareness about the mercury and toxic chemicals in fish, but that didn't make me anti-fish. All of my kids are vaccinated, and I believe vaccines have a critical role in healthcare.” Such declarations didn't assuage many Democratic lawmakers during the hearing. “You made almost $5 million from book deals mostly promoting junk science,” Wyden, ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, said. The senator quoted a 2021 book written by Kennedy (“The Measles Book”) in which he said people had been misled “into believing that measles is a deadly disease and that measles vaccines are necessary, safe and effective.” “The reality is measles are in fact deadly and highly contagious,” Wyden proclaimed, “something that you should have learned after your lies contributed to the deaths of 83 people — most of them children — in a measles outbreak in Samoa.” Kennedy denied he was responsible for the measles outbreak or kids not getting vaccinated in Samoa. He said his 2019 visit to Samoa had nothing to do with vaccines and asserted, “You cannot find a single Samoan who will say, ‘I didn't get a vaccine because of Bobby Kennedy.'” Takeaway three: Kennedy wants Americans to understand the health consequences of, and be accountable for, the substances they are ingesting in their bodies. I believe Kennedy is sincere in wanting to make America healthy again by giving consumers the scientific information they need to make informed decisions about their health. I find it challenging — or frankly nonsensical — to argue against his desire for government transparency and individual accountability. “In Medicaid and Medicare, we need to focus more on outcome-based medicine, on putting people in charge of their own healthcare, making them accountable for their own healthcare so they understand the relationship between eating and getting sick,” he explained in his testimony. Kennedy continued, “Most importantly, we need to … deploy NIH [National Institutes of Health] and FDA to doing the research to understand the relationship between these different food additives and chronic disease so that Americans understand it….” RFK Jr. added a caveat: He didn't want to remove food choices from Americans. “If you like … a McDonald's cheeseburger, a Diet Coke, which my boss loves, you should be able to get them,” he said, to which the gallery got a chuckle. “If you want to eat Hostess Twinkies, you should be able to do that.
